Mr. Espy, a former congressman and the first African-American to serve as agriculture secretary, was trying to become the state’s first Black senator since Reconstruction. He had run competitively in the conservative state by explicitly talking about race.

Ms. Hyde-Smith, who is the first woman elected to Congress from Mississippi, drew criticism during the previous election for making a cavalier reference to a public hanging.
